I got tired of hating myself and only seeing my body in purely aesthetic terms. I needed to start using my body in a variety of ways in order to become comfortable and accepting of it, and eventually, to learn to love it. And it’s not about what I look like anymore; it’s only about how I feel.
I am now able to recognize that my body is capable of so much more than simply being perceived as physically attractive to myself and others. My interest in fitness has become a healthy coping mechanism to combat the depression that for years I attempted to fight with self harm and disordered behaviors.
It gives me something to care about; something to be excited for when I wake up in the morning. It’s something I can continue throughout my entire life; there’s no one goal that I’ll reach and consider that I’ve “made it”. It’s a constant journey to becoming the person I want to be. It’s something that will always be there, as long as I want it.
